As we've been fans forever and been playing Great Lake Swimmers on Mateo's Magic Bus on KFFR 88.3 FM since the show's beginnings in 2019, what a treat to see them live and up close at the amazing Global Hall in Globeville, Denver.
Compared in the past to greats like Sun Kil Moon and Iron and Wine, Great Lake Swimmers now cast their own wake, especially considering their new album, Uncertain Country, which, now 20+ years on, could be their best - but a very hard thing to judge with so many great albums along the way!
One highlight near the middle of the video and evening is Tony Dekker's solo rendition of Moving Pictures Silent Films, a haunting, beautiful tune, the first track off their first album. The original recording was done in an abandoned grain silo in Southern Ontario, where you can hear farmland insects in the background - one of my faves.
We left the show with full hearts, some tears shed (yes it was that good), and the intimate crowd was all on the same page - my favorite moment was Your Rocky Spine (I left the whole as the outro to the this video, enjoy!) - literally the whole place was bouncing up and and down together for the whole song, one of my favorite show moments of all time, and there have been a lot of them!
Thank you, Tony and the Great Lake Swimmers for all the music you have created and for a wonderful night in Globeville, I know all who were there feel the same.
Rock on,
DJ Mateo
