A few months back I was excited to read about the new phenomena, DOMi & JD Beck - unconventional, young, super talented... first album on Blue Note? Herbie Hancock and Thundercat among a who's who list of collaborators? I've been featuring their album (NOT TIGHT) on the Bus almost every week since.
This past week, the Bus was fortunate to pull into Denver's Cervantes Masterpiece Theatre (in one of the great historic neighborhoods of jazz, Five Points) for a packed house eager to see this new dynamic duo. Cervantes actually had booked them in their much smaller side stage but demand was over the top and they were moved into the main space. Click on the the YouTube plugin below or visit the Mateo's Magic Bus YouTube Channel (here) for all MMB On the Road videos from the past year plus.
To call this music intelligent and esoteric is an understatement so we were shocked to see an enthusiastic, packed house - you would have thought the Stones were coming out circa mid 90s. In case you've missed the phenomena, a quick high level from Wikipedia: "Domi and JD Beck (stylized as DOMi & JD BECK) are a jazz duo consisting of French keyboardist DOMi Louna and American drummer JD Beck. The two met in 2018 and have since worked with Thundercat, Anderson .Paak, Herbie Hancock, Eric Andre, Ariana Grande, Earl Sweatshirt, Bruno Mars and many more."
The crowd at Cervantes was dancing and bopping, laughing and so impressed the whole way through - this duo is here to stay and really are both virtuosos and are synthesizing not only different styles of jazz but also many other genres in a way that I've not seen nor heard before. Looking forward to many great things head from these two, onward!
Until the next show, DJ Mateo out...
