Mateo's Magic Bus was parked front and center for The Bad Plus holding court at The Bluebird on East Colfax in Denver, one of the great small concert venues in the West. With Marc Ribot and Ceramic Dog as openers, the night was phenomenal end to end!
Fresh off his excellent and insightful interview on Marc Maron's WTF Podcast, Marc Ribot's latest project, Ceramic Dog, held the crowd in awe with their avant garde jazz/rock approach. Summed up well by Pitchfork: “ Ceramic Dog, a power trio of jazz geniuses who inflect literate rock with formidable chops. The synthesis is frenetic, potent, and at odds with the zeitgeist, even if Ribot’s lyrics decry today’s political oppression: Musically, he rejects both the voguish and the virtuosic in favor of his own whims…His progressive sentiments are welcome, and unfortunately more relevant than ever.”
Then, as they always do, The Bad Plus cruised in and made the space their own, playing a range of tunes from their new album and albums past over their 20+ years on the scene. It was their second show at The Bluebird with their latest addition to the band, guitarist, Be Monder, and it was easy to see that the band is eally taking to the new possibilities and direction that the instrument brings to their music, most notably complementing drummer Dave King, as he's able to pivot to any style from his jazz core.
Big thanks to neighbor and friend Erik for making the night happen and getting The Bus there, hoping The Bad Plus keep coming back to The Bluebird as its just a 15 minute walk for us!
Rock on,
DJ Mateo
