On this week's ride, your driver and guide DJ Mateo revisits the past 12 months and plucks a couple hours of the best blues, jazz, rock, soul and funk that was released in 2022. From Amos Lee's brand new remake of the classic Chet Baker Sings album - Amos said of the process:
"When you listen to Chet Baker, it sounds like he took a drag on a cigarette and the smoke just came out as a song, but it’s so much more than that. The breath work, the pitch control, the poignancy, the gaiety; the deeper I got inside the music, the more I fell in love with everything about it...it was a revelatory experience.
It didn’t just change the way I thought about these songs; it changed the way I thought about myself as a singer and as a songwriter. It changed everything."
Other great albums highlighted from the year include a 3rd installment, LongGone, from the Joshua Redman-led "Supergroup" including Brian Blade, Christian McBride and Brad Mehldau - which started in the mid '90s with now all band members legends and band leaders in their own right. Also highlighting new talent on the scene including DOMI & JD BECK and Kokoroko, plus the epic 3-album set I Am The Moon from Tedeschi Trucks, Wilco, Lyle Lovett, Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio and Makaya McCraven - it was an INCREDIBLE year in music and we celebrate it all on this show!
