Mateo’s Magic Bus takes listeners on a journey around the world each week, exploring the roots of jazz and blues alongside music from today and the past decades that has been influenced by these incredible art forms.
This week's show celebrates the life and immense contributions of Denver's own Ron Miles - great horn player, educator (head of Metropolitan State's Jazz program), and band leader. His first album on Blue Note and last album that he released in 2020, Rainbow Sign, was critically acclaimed and a capstone to an amazing career.
Here's a snipped from the Downbeat review (4.5 stars) of Rainbow Sign: "I Am A Man, Ron Miles’ previous album, upped the cornetist’s game by expanding his trio with guitarist Bill Frisell and drummer Brian Blade into a quintet by adding pianist Jason Moran and bassist Thomas Morgan. But that seems almost a baby step compared to Rainbow Sign, which ups the ante through the writing’s richness—by far Miles’ most impressive work as a bandleader."
Also, listen for the end juxtaposing the original Oasis version of Wonderwall with the Brad Mehldau Trio's live version from the Village Vanguard in 2006. Enjoy!
