1972 is often held up as the greatest year of new releases in history - so many forms and breakthroughs were happening, the year was really a culmination in so many respects. In this episode of Mateo's Magic Bus, DJ Mateo and guest DJ Todd attempt crunch the plethora of classics and amazing music created in '72 into 2 hours. During the show our expert panel of 2 hands down the verdict, 1972 is the GOAT!! Of course we look to our millions of Bus Riders to weigh in as well, but our initial list was so long we literally had to turn away as many songs as we played that afternoon.
The idea for this show first came from the Black Crowes' amazing 2022 album, titled 1972, as we've been playing song after song and thinking all things 1972 since its release earlier last year & friend of Mateo's Magic Bus, Erik Deutsch played keys on the European leg of the Crowes' 2022 European Tour.
As we poured through all the amazing music in the days and weeks leading up to the show, the final result and choices proved daunting to say the least. Household staples from Papa Was a Rollin' Stone, I Can See Clearly Now to Tumbling Dice, Lean on Me, Superstition, Do It Again, Old Man, Stand Back, Starman, Respect Yourself, Walk on the Wild Side, and on and on. After cutting and cutting we got the list down to 3.5 hours - then we had to cut that in half but we bet you'll agree, 1972 was at least as good as any year prior and any year hence. Please give a listen below on Soundcloud and let us know if you agree - at the least, you'll know and probably love every song.
One conclusion we had is that we saw so much of 1971 and '73 creating this playlist, we'll have to do similar shows for those years soon. Broadcast high in the Rockies each week from 2PM - 4PM MT on KFFR 88.3-FM and KFFR.org, Mateo’s Magic Bus takes listeners on a journey around the world, exploring the roots of jazz and blues alongside music from today and the past decades that has been influenced by these incredible art forms.
Let's rock like its 1972!
