Broadcast high in the Rockies Wednesdays from 2PM - 4PM MT on KFFR 88.3FM, KWTR 89.1FM, and KFFR.org, Mateo’s Magic Bus takes listeners on a journey around the world, exploring the roots of jazz and blues and how rock, soul and funk from today and the past decades have been influenced by these incredible art forms.
On this week's ride, host DJ Mateo interviews Tim Felten, the founder, leader and keyboardist for San Diego-based The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble (www.sfsemusic.com/) and is set to release their new album, Gemini, via Colemine Records (www.coleminerecords.com/). In Latin, the word Gemini denotes “two together” or “twins”. In astrological terms, Geminis are noted for, amongst other things, being curious and versatile. For San Diego’s 9-piece instrumental combo The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble, Jazz and Funk have always been the two genres that they’ve consistently and effectively melded together, forming the bedrock of their sound. Exercising their stylistic curiosity and versatility, they’ve expanded upon this foundation on their new 11-song long player for Colemine Records.
DJ Mateo and Tim cover the waterfront, from his beginnings and varied influences to the formation of The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble more than 10 years ago, to their work with Colemine, future plans and their new album, Gemini. Enjoy this amazing interview and band & a few of their choice tunes from Gemini and their last album are included at the end of the interview.
